A Historical Picnic Tour: Step Back in Time at Columbia State Historic Park

Located in the historic town of Columbia, California, this perfectly preserved Gold Rush-era town offers a glimpse into one of the most colorful eras in American history. From picnicking in a shaded area behind the museum to stagecoach rides and gold panning, there’s something for everyone at this remarkable destination.

Columbia was once known as the “Gem of the Southern Mines” during the Gold Rush period of the 1850s and 1870s. In those decades, over one billion dollars in gold, valued at today’s rates, was mined in the area. Unlike many other settlements that fell victim to fire, vandalism, and the passage of time, Columbia survived and was never completely deserted. Recognizing its historical significance, the State Legislature designated the site as a State Historic Park in 1945, aiming to preserve this typical Gold Rush town for future generations.

When you arrive at Columbia State Historic Park, you’ll be pleased to find that parking and entrance are free. Take a leisurely stroll through the park’s bustling streets, where you can explore local businesses offering a variety of delights. Indulge in hand-dipped chocolates, enjoy a superior cup of coffee, or savor a meal at one of the fine dining or family-friendly establishments. You can even pick up provisions for a delightful picnic experience.

Speaking of picnics, the park provides picnic tables in a shaded area behind the museum, creating a tranquil spot for lunch. Imagine enjoying your meal surrounded by the rich history and ambiance of the Gold Rush era. After your picnic, why not embark on a stagecoach ride? Feel the excitement of riding in a horse-drawn carriage, just like the pioneers did all those years ago. Alternatively, try your hand at gold panning and experience the thrill of discovering precious flakes in the same way as the early prospectors.

Columbia State Historic Park offers more than just a picnic experience. You can immerse yourself in the town’s history by visiting the museum, which is open daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). The museum provides a fascinating insight into the life and times of the Gold Rush era. Additionally, if you’re interested in learning even more, consider joining one of the daily town tours. From June 15th to Labor Day, tours take place daily at 11:00 am from Monday to Friday, based on staff and docent availability. During the rest of the year, tours are held on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00 am, led by knowledgeable staff and docents. These tours typically last for about an hour and offer a comprehensive exploration of the town’s historical landmarks and stories.

For larger groups of over ten people, special tours can be arranged in advance by emailing ColumbiaSHP@parks.ca.gov. This ensures that everyone in your group can have an enriching and tailored experience.

If you happen to visit on the second Saturday of the month, you’re in for a treat. Gold Rush Days occur during this time, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. On these special days, numerous exhibits are open for exploration, and volunteers dressed in period attire lead hands-on activities throughout the afternoon. It’s a fantastic opportunity to engage with history in a tangible and interactive way.

In addition to all these wonderful experiences, don’t miss out on a visit to the two-story brick schoolhouse and cemetery overlooking the town. You can also take a leisurely hike along the one-mile nature trail, where you may catch a glimpse of mule deer and wildflowers in bloom.
