A Day of Fun and History

As you wander through Empire Mine State Historic Park, you’ll be transported back to the days of the California Gold Rush. The Miners Picnic Area is surrounded by remnants of the once-thriving gold mine, offering a sense of awe and wonder at the stories etched into the land.

The Miners Picnic began in 1895 as a benefit for the families of deceased miners. This year, we continue the tradition with a range of activities and entertainment:

  • Live Music and Performances: Enjoy performances that capture the spirit of the original Miner’s Picnics over 100 years ago.
  • Historic Children’s Games: Let your kids experience the fun of traditional games from the past.
  • Hard Rock Mining Activities: Try your hand at mining activities and learn about the techniques used during the gold rush.
  • Vintage Model-A Cars: Marvel at beautifully maintained vintage cars on display.
  • Docents in Period Attire: Knowledgeable guides in historical dress will demonstrate mining equipment and share fascinating stories.

Delicious Food and Refreshments

Bring your own picnic lunch or enjoy a variety of food available for purchase, including ice cream and hot dogs. Pack a basket filled with your favorite snacks, refreshing salads, and mouthwatering treats. The scent of freshly brewed coffee or the delightful fizz of sparkling drinks adds a touch of luxury to your outdoor feast. Don’t forget your picnic blanket!

Explore the Mine Owner’s “Cottage” Mansion

The mine owner’s mansion and clubhouse will be open for tours. Knowledgeable docents will be in attendance to provide insights into the history and significance of these historic buildings.
