Elegant Dining with Historical Flair at City Hotel Restaurant

Immerse yourself in history and fine dining at Columbia City Hotel Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Columbia State Historic Park. Originally opened by George Morgan in 1856 as the Morgan Hotel and Restaurant, this establishment boasts a rich heritage and an elevated dining experience that pays homage to its past while delighting modern palates.

A Glimpse into the Past

The City Hotel’s journey began in the tent town of Columbia in 1850. Over the years, it evolved from wood-framed structures to a resilient brick building, surviving fires and transformations. The hotel’s history mirrors the growth and resilience of the town itself.

A Legacy of Change

George Morgan’s perseverance after the 1854 fire led to the creation of wood buildings, including the “English Ale and Porter House.” By 1856, he replaced a wood building with a two-story brick structure, which later endured the 1857 fire. In the 1870s, the structure expanded further, and through the years, different proprietors added their stories to the hotel’s narrative.

A Historical Haven

Over time, the City Hotel featured rooms for lodgers, a hall for theatricals and concerts, and even a saloon called the “What Cheer House.” Despite challenges, including a lack of heat in upper floors during chilly winters, the hotel endured. In 1947, the State of California acquired the building, using it for storage until its restoration in 1974 when it reopened as the City Hotel.

Remembering the Founders

George and Margaret Morgan, immigrants from Wales and Ireland respectively, left their mark on Columbia. Their legacy lives on in the George P. Morgan Room, commemorating their contributions to education and the town.

A Dining Experience of Distinction

Today, the City Hotel Restaurant offers an elevated menu curated by Lead Chef Jimmy Vela. Rooted in traditional American cuisine, the dishes feature locally sourced ingredients and an impressive selection of Sierra foothills wines. Pair your meal with wine, a draft beer, or a hand-crafted cocktail for a complete sensory experience.

Upcoming: What Cheer Saloon

Adding to the charm, the What Cheer Saloon is set to open soon, offering an extension of the historical ambiance and a perfect place to unwind.
