Get Ready to Jazz it Up with The Earles of Newtown in Nevada County!

Are you looking for talented local artists for your private events or simply looking to enjoy live music in Nevada County, California? Look no further than The Earles of Newtown! This nine-piece band hails from Nevada City and has been playing together for six years. Their unique blend of old-timey New Orleans jazz and contemporary lyrics has been described as “funky Dixieland-rag-jazz,” and is sure to please any music lover.

Led by band leader Earle Ford, The Earles of Newtown got their name after a jam session on Earle’s front porch on Newtown Road. The band initially set out to be a Texas swing band, but after experimenting with different sounds, they settled on their signature blend of genres. Despite their name, there’s only one Earle in the band, but their sound more than makes up for the lack of “Earles.”

The band consists of a talented lineup of musicians, including Earle Ford on vocals, trumpet, alto horn, trombone, kazoo, and tenor guitar, Chad Conner Crow on vocals, washboard, and madness, Joe Fajen on tenor trombone, bass trombone, tuba, and backing vocals, Jim Trefethen on soprano, alto, and baritone saxophone, Dave Wilcox on tenor banjo, acoustic guitar, and backing vocals, Bob Woods on electric, acoustic, lap, and pedal steel guitars, Adam Haun Metroka on bass and backing vocals, Reid Alan Kurks on drums, and Brent Leever on piano.

One of the band’s standout members is Bob Woods, a legendary guitarist who is an inductee in the Western Swing Hall of Fame. Woods collaborated with “The Golden Voice of the Great Southwest” Utah Phillips, a folk singer and labor organizer who lived in Nevada City for 21 years. His guitar skills are unparalleled and are a testament to the band’s commitment to their craft.

The Earles of Newtown have been described as the “feral rebels of this jazz culture,” and their unique blend of genres is sure to leave a lasting impression. Their sound is not quite swing, nor is it hot jazz, but it is something entirely different and entirely their own. Earle Ford and Chad Conner Crow share lead vocals, and their stage presence is second to none. Crow, who wears a derby hat during performances, has become something of a signature for the band. The hat reportedly has some ju-ju in it and is said to bring good luck to those who wear it.

If you’re in the Nevada County area, be sure to catch The Earles of Newtown at one of their upcoming performances. Their debut show at the Alibi Ale Works – Truckee Public House is sure to be a hit, and you won’t want to miss it. Whether you’re looking to hire talented musicians for your private events or simply looking for a night of great live music, The Earles of Newtown are the perfect choice.
